Driftwood is a story of a man who has lost his job. Too embarrassed to tell his wife, he sets off for work day after day, wasting his time around the small seaside town where he lives. The story was set and filmed in Canvey Island, which allowed me to work with the contrast between the apparent jollity of his surroundings in contrast to his internal state of mind. The weather worn cartoon characters in the amusement arcades play off against the bleak stony beaches and distant factories of the Thames estuary. Filmed as a first term project at the London Film School. The shoot was in 16mm black&white film, with no sound.
